Admission requirements

This course is only available for students in the BA International Studies who have passed Persian 1 Beginners.

Description

Persian II is an intensive course for students, who have passed Persian I. Persian or farsi is the major language of Iran and Tajikistan, and it is one of the two official languages of Afghanistan. It is also spoken in parts of Uzbekistan. This course provides the students with the intermediate structures and the intermediate vocabulary of Persian as it is spoken and written in Iran. The course is based on an interactive method, giving space to the students to practice and to make sure that he/she is progressing in the learning process. In this couse the focus will be on communicative skills, however grammar still is important for understanding more complex syntactic and semantic stuctures, while audiovisual material will help the student to efficiently improve pronunciation as well as listening and fluency skills. During the course and via the course materials the students will acquire knowledge on certain aspects of Iranian culture and society. The course requires a substantial amount of self-teaching and preparation at home and active participation in class.

Course objectives

This course aims at A1 / A2 level of the Common European Framework.

  • Speaking: Learners will acquire communicative skills enabling them to converse about simple and routine matters. They will be able to describe aspects of their personal backgrounds, immediate environments and other matters in areas of immediate need in simple terms.

  • Listening: Learners will be able to understand standard speech on common topics and to extract the main point of messages and announcements provided that people talk slowly.

  • Reading: Learners will be able to read and understand short texts on familiar matters containing basic vocabulary.

  • Writing: Learners will be able to write notes in Persian script on familiar topics.

Mode of instruction

Lectures

Three two-hour tutorials every week, with the exception of the midterm exam week. Attending all tutorial sessions is compulsory. If you are unable to attend a session, please inform your tutor in advance, providing a valid reason for your absence. Being absent will result in a lower of the participation grade with 0.5 for every absence after the first three (3) times.

Course Load

Total course load for this course is 10 EC (1 EC = 28 hours), this equals 280 hours, broken down by:

  • Attending classes: (6 hours per week over 12 weeks) 72 hours

  • Preparing classes, exams and extra activities : 202 hours

  • Assessment hours (exams and other assessment): 6 hours

Assessment method

  • Assessment: Written exam and quiz.

  • Assessment: In-class oral/listening performance.

End grade

To successfully complete the course, please take note that the end grade of the course is established by determining the weighted average of the in-class oral and listening performance and exams.

Resit

If the end grade is insufficient (lower than a 6), there is a possibility of retaking the full 80% of the exam material (reading, writing, speaking and listening). No resit for the tutorial (participation) is possible.

Exam review

How and when an exam review takes place will be determined by the examiner. This review will be within 30 days after official publication of exam results.

Blackboard

Blackboard will be used for tutorial groups. Students are requested to enroll on Blackboard for this course, but only after correct enrolment in uSis.
