Description

An introduction to Lithuanian, the Baltic language of the Republic of Lithuania. Lithuanian is the only living language that plays an important role in the reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European. It is archaic in a number of respects, mainly phonology, nominal morphology and syntax. During the first half of the course the most important aspects of the sound system and gramar of Lithuanian will be discussed and practised with the help of weekly assignments. The second part of the course will focus on the history of the Lithuanian language, with special attention for its Indo-European origins.

Course objectives

At the end of the course, participants are expected to:

  • have good knowledge of the most important aspects of Lithuanian grammar;

  • possess elementary reading skills in Lithuanian;

  • be able to interpret Lithuanian data from an Indo-European perspective.

Assessment method

Written half-term examination (50%) and final examination (50%) with open questions. There will be a resit for both at the end of the term.
