Description

Lamaholot is an Austronesian dialect chain located in eastern Indonesia. The varieties of Lamaholot are diverse and only part of it has been described by linguists. This course is about the Lamaholot variety of Central Lembata. This variety is spoken in the inland of the island Lembata and has developed a higher complexity than its neighboring varieties. During the course, several aspects of the Central Lembata grammar are introduced, including its phonology, its nominal and verbal morphology and its locational system. Apart from the linguistic aspects, the cultural and historical context of the Central Lembata people is taken into account and discussed.

Course objectives

  • Students name structural features of Central Lembata Lamaholot and can identify them as typical Austronesian or not.

  • Students describe a structural pattern in Central Lembata Lamaholot using terminology with language-specific definitions.

  • Students gloss and translate a Central Lembata Lamaholot text.

  • Students plan and structure a descriptive paper.

  • Students compile a short descriptive paper.

Written take home assignment 1: 20 %

Oral presentation: 20 %

Final paper: 40 %

Exam review

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
