Course
2017-2018

Admission requirements

To be a registered student of any Master programme at Leiden University or other Dutch University, and to have a good command of the Spanish language. Also open for some senior bachelor students who want to specialize on Chile.

Description

Each year an eminent Chilean scholar is invited to occupy this Visiting Professorial Chair at the Department of Latin American Studies (LAS). The Chile Chair focuses on the social, cultural, political and economic evolution of Chile, with special emphasis on the national reality from the 1980s onwards. This course examines the public policies on education implemented in Chile since the 1990s and their social and political impact among the population (including the students protest of recent years).

Course objectives

To be able to assimilate in a relatively short period of time a specialized account about a specific socio-economic, political and cultural subject that is currently taking place in Chile. To write a paper based partly in Chilean local sources about one of the topics which have been studied during the course. To make a structured oral presentation in public in which an in-depth analysis is made about a particular article.
