Historical Grammar of Greek I , or an equivalent course on Greek Historical Phonology
Course objectives
The course starts with an overview of the historical morphology of Ancient Greek: the origins of the different types of nominal inflection, the prehistory of the pronouns, the history of the verbal system with its tense/aspect distinctions, moods and personal endings. We will also pay attention to nominal and verbal word-formation (derivation). Emphasis is on the morphological categories of Homeric and Ionic-Attic Greek, but other dialects (including Mycenaean) are also taken into consideration.
Apart from Historical Grammar, this course also gives an introduction to the meter and content of Homer’s Iliad. We will read appr. 200 lines during class, paying attention not only to historical morphology, but also to linguistic differences between Homeric and later Attic Greek. Moreover, in preparation for the exam, students prepare an additional 200 lines by themselves.

The final marked is the weighed average of the two parts, which should both be sufficient
There will be a resit for the written examination.
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
