Course information
This course gives an introduction to financial reporting. More specifically, it will focus on accounting (including balance sheet management) and capital requirements. Accounting will be taught on the basis of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), i.e. the rules that dictate how financial statements must be organised. Students will learn how to critically assess a company’s financial statement, including its balance sheet, and income and cash flow statement. Also, key elements such as liquidity, solvency, profitability, and capital management will be discussed. These elements play a prominent role in valuation of publicly traded companies, banks included.
Course learning objectives
Any lawyer working in the field of finance should have knowledge of financial reporting.
Students gain overview knowledge and understanding of financial reporting rules, most notably IFRS, with a focus on Statement of Financial Position (balance sheet), Statement of Comprehensive Income, and Cash Flow Statement..
Students are able to explain the different functions of balance sheets and Statement of Comprehensive Income, and Cash Flow Statement;
Students are able to apply financial reporting rules in that they can show how various transactions change a compnay’s balance sheet and income and cash flow statement;
Students are able to critically assess a company’s financial statement, including its balance sheet and Statement of Comprehensive Income, and Cash Flow Statement as well as the rules that apply to it (IFRS).
Students will understand how a given transaction would affect a company’s balance sheet, and Statement of Comprehensive Income, and Cash Flow Statement.
More specifically, students gain thorough knowledge and understanding of business analysis and capital management.

Required preparations by students: reading of prescribed materials, preparation of case studies and any other assignments. A student cannot be absent from the seminars.

Exam: 2 hours
Total: 140 hours
Examination method
Presentation with short paper: 30%
Final exam: 70%; 2 hours written exam.
Students are able to apply financial reporting rules in that they can show how a given transaction would affect a company’s Statement of Financial Position (balance sheet), Statement of Comprehensive Income, and Cash Flow Statement;
Students are able to show they can critically assess a given company’s Statement of Financial Position (balance sheet), Statement of Comprehensive Income, and Cash Flow Statement under IFRS;
Students are able to show they can critically assess a given bank’s balance sheet under Basel III
Areas to be tested within the exam:
The examination syllabus consist of the required reading (literature) for the course, the course information guide and the subjects taught in the lectures, the seminars and all other instructions wich are part of the course.
The final grade, on the scale from 1(poor) to 10 (excellent), for the course is established by determining the weighted average and rounded to full grades. Grade 6 (5.5 rounded) is a pass.
The opportunity exists to re-take the exam. Further information will be communicated through Blackboard.
