Course information
The Advanced Master Law & Finance curriculum concludes with a master thesis. The thesis addresses and analyses a topic that falls within the subject area of one of the courses offered within the programme. It must include both a comparative perspective (e.g. between the national and the European level legislation) and a substantive perspective (e.g. the (potential or actual) impact of supranational law on the national financial law). The master thesis reflects individual research, but can be done in combination with an internship, if approved by the programme director. The topic of the thesis must mirror the international and academic nature of the advanced master; therefore topics that deal primarily with domestic law or are descriptive do not qualify. The thesis should be between 30 and 50 pages long, excluding cover, personal statement, table of contents, executive summary, overview of main findings and bibliography, but including footnotes.
Course objectives
The following achievement levels apply with regard to the thesis.
Students demonstrate their ability to conduct academically sound research on a topic in the area of Law & Finance;
Students demonstrate their ability to present the findings of this research in writing in a clear and structured way;
Students show their ability to investigate and present relatively new and innovative findings.
Ideally, the thesis is of publishable quality.
Mode of instruction
In addition to bilateral meetings in the context of the individual supervision of the student by a professor or senior lecturer:
November/December 2017: ‘Thesis Breakfast’
General information meeting on the thesis (discussing matters such as object and purpose within the programme; requirements and assessment; the importance of starting early looking for an appropriate, interesting and feasible subject;
Special seminar on research methodology.
February/March 2018: Preparation of individual thesis
Individual or small group meetings with the students to discuss possible subjects;
Advice for potential supervisors.
1 March 2018
Deadline submitting research proposal to the programme director for approval (max. 2
pages, written proposal);
Supervisor is appointed.
March 2018
- Small group meetings to discuss progress (peer review by students themselves, under supervision of the academic coordinator and/or programme director).
3 April 2018
- Deadline submitting final research proposal to supervisor.
April-June
Small group meetings to discuss work in progress, problems encountered, etcetera (peer review by students themselves under supervision of the academic coordinator or programme director).
Max. 2 meetings with supervisor.
1 July 2018
- Deadline final draft.
July – middle of August 2018
Feedback of supervisor (in first two weeks of July);
Writing and finalizing thesis on an individual basis.
12 August 2018:
- Deadline thesis.
