Seminar: Writing Research Proposal

Admission requirements

Compulsory for first year RESMAAS students.

Description

In the period the course is offered, the students have to write their individual research proposals. The course supports the students in developing their proposal by tackling the basic building stones of a good research proposal. During the sessions, the students bring in parts of their draft proposal fro discussion. Comments will be provided by the fellow students and the instructors. Specific attention will be paid to structure and coherence of the proposal, the formulation of clear and researchable research questions, and questions of academic embeddedness and originality.

Course objectives

After completion of the course, the students will be able to:

  • Write a research proposal that is both academically sound and practically feasible;

  • Orally present their research plans

  • Give feedback

  • Receive feedback

  • Reflect on feedback received and defend their choices

Course Load

The course comprises 5 EC and te total course load is thus 140 hrs.

  • 24 hrs of these will be spent preparing and attending class

  • 36 hrs to be spent on studying literature and compiling documents

  • 80 hrs for writing the final proposal.

Assessment method

Assessment:

  • Mandatory presence of at least 80 percent

  • The level of achievement of the course objectives will be evaluated on the basis of the assignments, student’s engagement in the group discussions, and engagement with the feedback offered.

  • Evaluation of the final research proposal (‘a pass’ is required for the student to be allowed to leave on fieldwork)

Resit will be done in consultation with the course instructor.

Exam review

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
