Systems Pharmacology

Course
2018-2019

Description

Systems pharmacology aims to understand drug action through separation of drug response into biological system and drug-specific components. The use of systems pharmacology approaches can address challenges in translational and clinical drug development and may support development of personalized medicine approaches.
We focus on the discovery and application of (novel) biomarkers for disease progression and drug treatment response to enable scaling across biological model systems and treatment individualization (personalized medicine). To this aim we explore the relevance of state-of-the-art omics approaches including metabolomics and the use of computational modeling to understand and quantify drug exposure-response relationships across biological systems and patient populations.

Course Objectives

  1. Understanding the main scientific concepts underlying the research field of systems pharmacology and biomarker research, and their application in drug development and personalized medicine.
  2. Understanding state-of-the-art biomarker discovery approaches and experimental models in the field of systems pharmacology.
  3. Understanding of key computational methods uses the field of systems pharmacology.

Mw. Dr. I. Kohler, Mw. Dr. S. Völler, Dhr. Dr. J.G.C. van Hasselt

Mode of instruction

  • Lectures

  • Hands-on exercises

  • Case study

Assessment method

The final grade will be the based on the grade of the written exam (individual grade) and the oral presentation according to a 70/30 ratio. Students will pass the course if the grade for the written exam is ≥ 5.0 and their average grade is ≥ 6.

Admission requirements & Registration

This course is mandatory for and restricted to students who do the Minor ‘Computational approach to Disease Signaling and Drug Targets’ (CADSDT; the entire Minor or only Part 1) or the Elective Module DSDT. The same admission criteria apply to this course as for the respective afore mentioned programs.
