Description
Metabolomics has become an important metabolic profiling tool in life sciences, including studies of plant interaction with its environment and studies on the activity of medicinal plants. This course will cover basic phytochemistry, analytical platforms for metabolomics (NMR, Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry), data interpretation with Multivariate Data Analysis, and example of application of metabolomics to life science.
Learning goals
Course objectives:
This course aims at providing broad knowledge on the metabolomics. Participants are expected to learn about basic biosynthesis of natural products, analytical chemistry of natural products using chromatography and spectroscopy, and data mining with a series of multivariate data analysis.
Final qualifications:
Participants understand the goal of metabolomics in life science, basic concept of analytical platforms (chromatography, Mass spectrometry, and NMR) currently used for metabolomics. Also, they will understand the basics of multivariate data analysis to interpret analytical data.

Remarks
This course is a part of an international workshop (Metabolomics Workshop) organized by Y.H. Choi and R. Verpoorte since 2008. The participants will join together with international students and international guest lecturers. For each subtopic of lectures, 7-9 international guest lecturers will be invited. There is limitation of place for the students of Leiden University (ca. 5 places are available). The course will take place in Pieterskerkhof 6, Leiden (for lectures in the first week) and practice will be Sylvius building.
