Speech Acts

Course
2018-2019

Admission requirements

Admission to this course is restricted to BA students in Philosophy, who have successfully completed their first year, and who have also completed at least 10 EC’s of the mandatory components of their second year, including:

  • Wetenschapsfilosofie

  • Taalfilosofie

Description

Speech act theory is generally understood as part of philosophy of language: we not merely use language to describe; we do things with words. The course investigates the question to what extent speech acts should play a role in logic. How essential is the asssertive force to logic? Do we need other speech acts, such as requesting or challenging a claim, to develop a dialogical logic? Do we need a special act of supposal? Are there special speech acts we use in fiction?

We read writings by Searle, Frege, Dummett, Davidson and Martin-Löf.
