Admission requirements

The Seminar is obligatory for all students enrolled in the MA Classics and Ancient Civilizations.

Description

The Classics and Ancient Civilizations MA-Seminar is an obligatory reqruirement for all students enrolled in the MA Classics and Ancient Civilizations. It contains the following elements:

  • Thesis training: academic and technical writing skills

  • Career training (personal skills and job applications) – carried out in cooperation with the Academic Career Center

  • Joint Project carried out by students from all tracks on an interdisciplinary topic making use of relevant connections in Leiden (e.g. RMO).

The final program will be announced at the beginning of the academic year 2018/2019.

Course objectives

The course aims to:

  • Enhance the students’ academic writing and presentation skills;

  • Prepare students for the job market;

  • Intensify cooperation among students from the various Classics and Ancient Civilizations tracks;

  • Foster appreciation among students of the diversity and cohesion of Mediterranean antiquity as a whole;

  • Stimulate reflection about the place of one’s chosen track in the context of the program as a whole;

  • Develop the students’ communcative skills to present an interdisciplinary topic from the ancient Mediterranean to a wider public

  • Introduce students to relevant collections at Leiden and stimulating their academic use.

Students can start the Classics and Ancient Civilizations MA-Seminar in September (group 1) and February (group 2), depending on their date of enrolment. Students are required to follow the class elements in the prescribed order.

Mode of instruction

  • Lectures;

  • Assignments;

  • Discussion sessions.

Course load

The total course load will be 140 hours consisting of:

  • Class attendance: 10 x 2hrs = 20 hrs

  • Class preparation: 4 x 5 hrs = 20 hrs

  • Project assignment: 80 hrs

  • Presentation: 20 hrs.

Assessment method

The Classics and Ancient Civilizations MA-Seminar operates a “pass or fail” assessment system based on attendance of all seminar sessions and “passes” for each assignment.
Participation in the Seminar is successfully concluded if all seminar elements are graded with a "pass".

Weighing

Not applicable. The course works with a pass or fail system.

Resit

If one or more of the course elements are graded with a "fail", students are required to write a 5 ec- paper on an interdiciplinary topic assigned by the seminar coordinator.

Exam review

Students will be invited to discuss the presentation and project assignment with the teacher, as soon as the results have been published.

Blackboard

Blackboard will be used as means of communication and to distribute study material.
