Admission requirements
Modern Standard Arabic 1.
This course is only open to students in the BA Midden-Oostenstudies and MA Middle Eastern Studies (tracks Modern Middle East or Islamic Studies).
Description
This is the second of a four-course sequence that aims at helping students learn and use Arabic. This course builds on skills and knowledge gained in MSA 1 to reach an advanced beginner level. This course will take students from repeating individual words and memorized phrases, to the beginnings of creating sentences, and further develops their appreciation of Arab cultural perspectives, practices and products.
Course objectives
In addition to memorized simple words and phrases, students will be able to construct simple sentences. Students will be able to understand and express information about familiar topics like self, family, habits, daily schedules, etc. in a culturally appropriate manner.

Mode of instruction
Seminar
Attendance and active participation are obligatory for seminars. Students are required to prepare for and attend all sessions. The convenors need to be informed without delay of any classes missed for a good reason (i.e. due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness, family issues, problems with residence permits, the Dutch railways in winter, etc.). In these cases it is up to the discretion of the convener(s) of the course whether or not the missed class will have to be made up with an extra assignment. The maximum of such absences during a semester is two. Being absent without notification and/or more than two times can result in exclusion from the term end exams and a failing grade for the course.
