Admission requirements

This course is designed for the minor Global Affaires. It is not possible to follow single courses of this minor. You need to be enrolled in Usis for the minor to be accepted to this course. There are 180 places open for registration, on a first come first serve basis, where LDE students are given priority.

Description

In this course students will study ‘Humanitarian Intervention and Peacebuilding’. During this course, students will discuss various interventions and peace building efforts in a globalised and changing world. The course will assess the role of the United Nations and other multilateral organisations in peacebuilding. It will address reconciliation processes and transitional justice mechanisms in order to build peace after international interventions and conflict and the peace vs. justice discussion. Students will discuss the main tools used in peacebuilding, including military interventions. Finally students will study how/whether local needs can be reconciled with the international community’s needs.

Course objectives

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • explain and apply the concepts of humanitarian intervention and peacebuilding;

  • apply the concepts of humanitarian intervention and peacebuilding on specific cases;

  • demonstrate a well-founded understanding of the use of force and peacebuilding in international politics

Mode of instruction

The course will consist of lectures and guest lectures.

Course Load

The total study load for this course is 140 hours, consisting of:
21 hours for attending lectures
119 hours studying – work on assignments**

Participation in lectures, discussions and exercises is required in order to obtain a grade. One lecture may be missed. Being absent more than once may likely lead to expulsion from the course.

Assessment method

2 Papers

  • Research paper (50%)

  • Debate paper (50%)

Late hand in penalty: 0,5 minus per day, and after seven days we do not accept papers any longer.

Compensation rule: the two essays cannot be compensated, a passing grade has to be obtained for both of them.

The Course and Examination Regulation Security Studies and the Rules and Regulation of the Board of Examiners of the Institute of Security and Global Affairs apply.
