Admission requirements

Only the following categories of students can register for this course:

  • Students enrolled for the Minor CA-OS

  • Exchange students who have been explicitly admitted to this course

  • Pre-master students who have completed their Admission procedure for the master CA-DS and have been formally admitted to this course as part of the pre-master programme.

This course is NOT meant for the BA students in Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology.

Description

This course offers an introduction into and an overview of main research methods and techniques within social sciences and specifically cultural anthropology, with an emphasis on ethnographic methods. Students will learn to formulate a research question, collect data by using specific research techniques, and critically analyse the data.

Course objectives

  1. Gaining basic knowledge on seting up and conducting empirical research.
  2. Learning about the most common methods in social sciences and applying those in practice.
  3. Learning to define and operationalise anthropological and sociological concepts.
  4. Understanding the relationship between research question(s), methods, analysis and knowledge.

To complete the final mark, please take notice of the following:
1) the final grade for the course is established by determining the weighted average
2) the final grade for the course is established by (i) determination of the weighted average combined with (ii) additional requirements. These additional requirements generally relate to one or more of the subtests always be sufficient.
