Individual Internship (NGO, Museum, etc.)

Course
2018-2019

Admission requirements

Only students CA-OS who have completed their propaedeutic phase and the second year course Veldwerk NL are eligible for an internship.

Description

An internship is a learning period in which the student carries out a specific, predefined task at an organization. The internship task must be academic in nature, that is to say, appeal to the intellectual capabilities and professional knowledge of the student, and must fit in with the specialization or professional plans of the student. The internship can be honored within the bachelor program CA / OS as a selection component of 20 ECTS under the name 'internship at (name of organization)', when all the following conditions are met.

In principle, the internship is organized by the student himself. Current internship vacancies offered to employees of the CA-OS Institute are announced via the bulletin board opposite the rooms 3A23 and 3A25, via the website of Itiwana and via the site of the Anthropologists Professional Association. Internship vacancies can also be requested via the internship coordinator.

The internship can take place both in the Netherlands and abroad.

Course Objectives

The student learns

  • how knowledge and skills from the CA-OS study can be translated into a concrete work situation.

  • how academic skills and social science research can be applied to the labor market.

  • reflect on his / her own learning objectives and competences regarding the internship and orientate on his / her future wishes regarding a professional career

Teaching method / Assessment

To complete the 'internship' course, a student must complete the following components:

  • In advance, an internship plan of 1 to 2 pages must be submitted to the internship coordinator. This plan must meet the internship requirements (see below) and contain the following elements:
  1. name of the organization, with explanation about activities of the organization,
  2. period of the internship, stating the number of hours per week (full-time / part-time),
  3. indication of physical workplace availability within the organization,
  4. name of the internship supervisor within the organization,
  5. internship assignment: description with explanation of the academic element. NB: Based on this, the internship coordinator within the course CA-OS will find a content tutor who will guide the student further during the research.
  6. connection with the CA / OS program: how is the internship relevant to the development of a CA / OS student, and how does the CA / OS student make a meaningful contribution to the organization from his / her background.
  • After approval of the internship plan, the student elaborates the academic element into a complete research proposal under the guidance of the lecturer-supervisor. The research proposal must be written and approved before the internship starts (at least 3 weeks in advance). Only in exceptional cases can this be deviated from, after explicit approval of the internship coordinator.

  • Students who do an internship outside the Netherlands must submit an indemnification form to the exchange coordinator (Matthijs Kallenberg) after approval of the internship plan.

  • The student must complete an internship of at least three months with a full-time appointment (38-40 hours per week), or six months with a part-time appointment (18-20 hours per week).

  • During or after the internship, the student must give a presentation about his / her activities and findings regarding the internship at one of the designated moments in the annual timetable (see timetable 'internship presentations').

  • After the internship, an internship report must be submitted to the internship coordinator for approval. The credits are awarded after approval of the internship report. This report should contain three elements: a chronological report of all activities undertaken (eg per week), plus a reflection on the internship itself (about 5 pages in total), the academic element (eg a copy of the research report) , a signed letter from the internship supervisor stating that the student has carried out his / her duties satisfactorily. If the internship coordinator has approved the report, the credits and a grade will be awarded

NB. Forms available from the internship coordinator are available for the internship plan and the internship report.

Internship requirements

  • An organization that is willing to offer you an internship. This means both a physical workplace at the organization and a concrete internship assignment. Within this organization there must be a formal internship supervisor, who is responsible for the progress of the internship. (The internship must be related to the CA / OS program - the student must learn something relevant) and must contribute something meaningful to the organization based on the knowledge and experiences gained during the study. The internship must include an academic element , so that during your internship period you can appeal to and develop academic skills, which means that at least 50% of the training time is spent on carrying out a study relevant to the internship organization. The research results must also be included in the internship report. The concrete task must be approved in advance by the internship coordinator. If the trainee works in a team with other interns on a project, this must be reported in advance. also recommended to set up an internship contract with the internship supervisor within the organization, in which the appointment knowledge about tasks, working hours, possible internship allowance, etc. are drawn up.

  • The internship must last three months. The internship can take place both in the Netherlands and abroad. The internship can be done part-time, for example six months 20 hours a week. A part-time internship is often desirable during an internship in the Netherlands, because the internship can then be combined with educational obligations.
