Description

This course provides an introduction to clinical and health psychology including relevant insights from personality psychology. Clinical psychology is concerned with the characteristics, causes and treatments of psychopathology. Health psychology focuses on health promotion and the psychological characteristics, causes and treatments of physical symptoms and diseases.

Course objectives

  • Students gain knowledge of the diagnosis, aetiology and treatment of the most important forms of psychopathology.

  • Students gain knowledge of the psychological diagnosis, aetiology and treatment of physical disorders and the promotion of healthy behaviour;

  • Students gain basic knowledge of the personality theories needed to understand psychopathology and health problems; and

  • Students gain experience of formulating and implementing a science-based behavioural change programme.

Registration

Course

First year psychology students are automatically enrolled for courses, but do need to register themselves for the exam.

Other students do not only need to register for exams themselves, but also for lectures and work group sessions. For information on registration periods consult the bachelor course registration

Examination

Students are not automatically enrolled for an examination. They can register via uSis from 100 to 10 calendar days before the date; students who are not registered will not be permitted to take the examination.

Mode of instruction

8 2-hours lectures (weblectures available)
8 2-hours workgroup session (attendance required)

Assessment method

The lectures conclude with an examination consisting of approximately 90 two-choice questions (70% of the mark).
The workgroup sessions conclude with a workgroup grade (30% of the final mark).

The workgroup grade is composed with 0,25 homework assignments, 0,25 presentation and 0,5 final paper.

The literature for the exam is the integral book: ‘Custom Published Book’ (Introduction to Personality, Clinical and Heatlh Psychology, (1st edition). Leiden University Custom Edition 2018, McGrawHill) (ISBN 1526847205) and the lectures slides. The content of this book is identical to the 5th edition of this book from 2017. The difference is that the new version includes a link to a digital learning environment to facilitate studying the literature and preparing for the exam. The book of K. Pryor and the syllabus are not part of the exam.

The Institute of Psychology uses fixed rules for grade calculation and compulsory attendance. It also follows the policy of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences to systematically check student papers for plagiarism with the help of software. Disciplinary measures will be taken when fraud is detected. Students are expected to be familiar with and understand the implications of these three policies.

Date and time of consultation of the exam will be announced at a later date.
