Music: Introduction Jazz History

Description

This course gives an insight into the styles of the three periods of jazz: the historical, the institutional and the digital period. Improvisation and swing, the functioning of the rhythm section and the melody section, as well as musical, social and cultural interaction will be discussed. Attention will be given to how to listen to jazz in order to learn how to identify the characteristics of the various styles. Knowledge of music theory is not required. However, students are expected to have seen and studied the various ‘knowledge clips’ before visiting the classes in which the content of these clips are being dealt with.

Location

The lectures/workgroups take place at Lipsius building, Cleveringaplaats 1, 2311 BD Leiden,** room 228**.
The exam takes place at room 147 of the Lipsius building.

Mode of instruction

Lecture and knowledge video clips.

Assesment method

Online exam with auditory questions and using video material.
