Fine Arts: Graphic design 2

Course
2018-2019

Entrance requirements

The students show a portfolio/body of work before entering the department/course. Although it might come in handy, the students taking the Graphic Design 1 class do not need to have any knowledge of the usual software such as the Adobe Creative Suite. What is required is an ability to visualize thoughts and ideas into a formal language: images in all kinds of shapes and sizes, but into text and words also. A certain amount of talent is required. What this includes is debatable and the list is endless, but these are some skills I think a student can have in order to start this class: he or she has an interest in drawing, writing, organizing of text and image, letter drawing, painting, editing, performing, photographing, filming, programming, think in a series of pages — whether those are of a book or any kind of digital medium. A student should be motivated to take part in group discussions and, in order to keep an exiting and productive process, have a critical but mostly an open mind towards the feedback of the teacher and of the peers.

Description

Quite alike to the previous course, in Graphic Design 2, students are given a variety of short and longer assignments. Meanwhile they are introduced to graphic design in a playful and energetic way. The assignments involve both analog and digital exercises and executions. Assignments can be hands on and intuitive, but may require some research at times, also. Some assignments will be more restricted than others. The students are challenged to discover their own voice and to develop skills besides the ones they already know how to apply. The students are at times asked to collaborate with one another to trigger unexpected outcomes.

Learning objectives

At the end of the academic year the students have been introduced to various ways of working and dealing with the many assignments. They will have worked with different techniques such as screen printing, design on large formats, exceptional volumes, various ways of presentation, using the Risographer for the reproduction of a larger edition, collage techniques, typography and type design, poster design, simple writing exercises, book design and making, generating content and editorial chores. They will be able to execute simple tasks using the usual graphic design software. The students will know how to use graphic design in order to give form to their ideas and fascinations. It should open up their idea of what graphic design is. To me graphic design is merely a medium to express myself with. My intensions for this class is to share this knowledge with the students with enthusiasm and energy.
