Introduction to epidemiology
One 200 level methods course in GPH (QRM, GIS, Qualitative research methods in GPH)
Description
In this course students will learn through active participation to identify the research gap from which you formulate research questions, while connecting these questions to quantitative or qualitative methodology relevant for Global Public Health. The course will address frequently used methodology relevant for the Capstone which includes systematic literature reviews, observational and clinical studies, surveys, interviews, policy and media analysis. Issues of reliability, validity and sources of bias within various qualitative and quantitative data collection will be discussed. During this course, students will read different 'methods' sections and research papers from various health-related disciplines (both social and biomedical sciences), which will help you learn to separate wheat from chaff and link the research gap and your research question to the most appropriate research methodology while taking into account ethical and practical constraints of public health research in your Capstone process.
Course objectives
After completion of this course students are able to:
Discuss philosophy, theories and concepts in research design;
Formulate research questions in their chosen field, relating these to the relevant theories and methods;
Critically evaluate research designs;
Write a research proposal.
