Topics in Linguistics D: Introduction to quantitative analysis and programming in R for linguists

Admission requirements

None but math C (within the Dutch high school system) is assumed.

Description

In this one block course you will be introduced to the statistical computing program R and descriptive statistics. By the end of the course you will be able to use R for simple and more complex data and functions, use R for data visualization, know how to program in R and to use R for descriptive statistics. By the end of the course the student will know how to use R for these basic operations and have laid a solid foundation for more advanced data analysis in R.

Course objectives

The learning goals of this course are:

  • the student knows how to use R and to get help

  • the student knows how to use R for simple data and simple functions

  • the student knows how to use R for complex data and complex functions

  • the student knows how to use R to display data

  • the student knows how to program simple programs in R

6 Lectures + workgroups

Course Load

5 EC = 140 hours

6 x 2 hours attending lectures / workgroups = 12 hours
6 x 8 hours completing assignments = 48 hours
6 x 8 hours studying literature (getting help) = 48 hours
Studing for the final exam: 30 hours
Attending the exam 1 hour

Assessment method

Weekly assignment need to be handed in in time in order to be eligible for participation in the final practical exam.

In a final practical exam student have to complete a series of assignments.

Resit of the exam is possible.
