Archaeology of the Americas

Admission requirements

This is a seminar with a limited amount of participants (20 students), for Archaeology students exclusively.

Description

This course will focus on archaeological research in the Americas paying special attention to recent studies, advances, and debates. The sessions will take the form of lectures and discussions, with an emphasis on the archaeology of the circum-Caribbean region and surrounding areas of mainland North and South America.
Students will be encouraged to develop critical reflections in a series of scholarly discussions which will form the basis of a final essay paper.

Course objectives

At the end of this course, the students are expected to achieve the following objectives:

  • to assess different types of archaeological evidence concerning the archaeology of the Americas;

  • to concisely summarise current research findings concerning the archaeology of the Americas;

  • to critically reflect upon the relevant literature and associated themes;

  • to understand the major current debates concerning the archaeology of the Americas;

  • to practice discussion and academic debate in a workgroup environment;

  • to enhance skills in essay writing.

Mode of instruction

  • Lectures;

  • Literature;

  • Assignments.

Course load

The course load will be distributed as follows:

  • 14 hours of lectures (1 ec);

  • 250 pages of literature (2 ec);

  • Assignments/discussion points (0,5 ec);

  • Essay (1,5 ec).

Assessment method

  • Discussion points (30%);

  • Final paper (70%).

The retake will consist of writing an essay.

All exam dates (exams, retakes, paper deadlines etc.) can be found in the BA2 examination schedule.

Registration

Registration via uSis is mandatory.

  • The Administration Office will register all BA1 students for their tutorials (not lectures; register via uSis!).

  • BA2, BA3, MA/MSc and RMA/RMSc students are required to register for all lectures and tutorials well in time.

  • Start registration for the BA2 seminars:
    Series 1: 16 September 2019, 07:00 hrs
    Series 2: 13 January 2020, 07:00 hrs
    Series 3: 24 February 2020, 07:00 hrs

  • The Administration Office registers all students for their exams, students are not required to do this in uSis.
