e-Health Interventions in Mental Health Care


Entry requirements

Only open to Master students (with a specialisation in Clinical Psychology, Health and Medical Psychology, Child and Adolescent Psychology, School Psychology or Clinical Neuropsychology).


The course introduces Master students to E-health interventions in mental health care. The course provides a broad overview on E-health in different clinical settings and addresses current applications, scientific evidence, and new developments. Students have online access to a treatment platform for e-mental health. Students practice with this programme both as a therapist and as a client. Students also participate in weekly peer discussions in online workgroups with online supervision by the course coordinators.

The lecture series features guest experts from various, specific mental health care settings, who will address their E-health practices, in specific disorders such as eating disorders, addiction and anxiety disorders, and across the lifespan. A wide variety of technical applications and relevant topics will be addressed, such as virtual reality, smartphone applications, blended forms of E-health, motivation, legal and ethical aspects of E-health, limitations, and future developments.

Course objectives

  • Students have knowledge about the current state of the art and scientific evidence of E-health interventions and applications in various Mental health care settings.

  • Students have knowledge about the basic principles of providing E-health interventions in mental health care settings.

  • Students have practical experience in an online E-health programme, both as therapist and client.

Students need to enroll for lectures and work group sessions. Master’s course registration

Mode of instruction

  • 8 2-hour lectures: to cover the relevant literature, to provide knowledge about E-health interventions and applications in mental health care. Presence is obligatory for all lectures.

  • 5 weekly online work groups: online group discussion (intervision) with fellow students,supervised by course coordinators on E-health programme work. Participation is mandatory in the E-Health programme and online work group sessions.

The official language of the course is English.

Assessment method

  1. Completing E-health programme as a therapist
  2. Completing E-health programme as a client
  3. Writing weekly group reflection reports on work with the E-health programme (pass/fail)
  4. Writing an individual reflection report on work with the E-health programme (Grade; 50% of the final grade)
  5. Writing an individual scientific review paper on a E-health topic of interest (Grade; 50% of the final grade)

Students have to pass both the reflection report and the scientific review paper. All reports have to be written in English. The resit involves writing a new report/paper.

The Institute of Psychology follows the policy of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences to systematically check student papers for plagiarism with the help of software. Disciplinary measures will be taken when fraud is detected. Students are expected to be familiar with and understand the implications of this fraud policy.
