Description
In this course, we will discuss various aspects of Japanese linguistics more or less comprehensively. Topics include phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, historical linguistics, and linguistic fieldwork.
Students will become familiar with basic aspects of linguistics, focusing on the Japanese language in particular. During block III, each week a different (set of) aspect(s) will be taken up, for which students do preparatory reading. The class itself consists of lectures, student-led discussions in small groups, as well as in-class assignments and exercises.
During Block IV, students will complete a research assignment while residing in Japan (the “Japan Project”). Students will write a proposal beforehand, and stay in contact with the teacher during their stay in Japan.

Assessment method
Participation: 40% (participation, leading discussion, in-class assignments)
Fieldwork proposal 20% (ca. 1,000 words)
Fieldwork report 40% (2,000-2,500 words)
Weighing
The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average
Resit
Resit will be composed of similar sub-tests (ie a combination of written assignments, a review of the work and an exam).
Blackboard
Blackboard will be used for all relevant information relating to the college, including course content, assignments, literature and links. All students must log in to Blackboard.

The following textbook will be used. The students have to purchase either the paperback version or the e-book version prior to the beginning of the course.
