Admission requirements

This course is to exclusive access for students of the Research Master Latin American Studies programme.

Description

In this seminar the student will obtain oral skills of a high academic level, while practicing different formats of the presentation of the research project. The student will work with the material that is being used for the writing of the thesis, which will be presented in different formats during the seminar. Next to learning to presented the results of research to an academic audience, the student will practice how to transform the research results of the master investigation in either a proposal for a phd project or an academic article.
The seminar is also intended to accompany the process of writing the Research Master Thesis, as it will constitute a space in which the student will present the progress as well as the difficulties, to receive (peer) feedback.

Course objectives

  1. To gain knowledge of the main formats of Academic presentation.
  2. The ability to give persuasive oral presentations;
  3. The ability to engage in the international academic debate.
  4. The ability to build an argument that leads to its conclusion in a clear, coherent, and verifiable manner
  5. Learn skills to present a research project with a great degree of independence

  • Classes: 28 hours

  • (written) assignments: 112 hours

Assessment method

Assessment

  • Oral presentation (20%)

  • Short written assignments (30%)

  • Final assignment (50%) (At the end of the course the student will choose one of the formats discussed during the seminar, phd-poroposal or academic article, for the final assignment).
    If the final grade is a 5.0 or lower, the student may do a resit (submitting a revised versión of the final assignment for 100% of the grade).

Exam review

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
