Description
This course deals with the relationship between cultural expressions - especially art, literature and cinema - and society in Spanish America. How do these expressions relate to what is happening in society? Spanish-American texts, performances and films respond to the events there in different ways. Some writers turn their backs on reality and write books that seem to have little to do with what is happening around them. Others seem to be unable to say anything about the events with words: they look for new forms and / or (a new) order. We watch, for example, performances that respond to the dictatorship in Chile, the display of class differences in a Mexican film, and how a Uruguayan writer turns the classic detective into a story in which there is no longer a crime or murderer. The ultimate goal of this course is to approach the political and cultural reality of Latin America in a more versatile way.
