Social, emotional, and behavioral functioning in schools

Students’ schools and classrooms are their daily learning environments. The social interactions that occur in these environments – including interactions among students and between students and teachers – affect students’ social, emotional, and behavioral functioning. This course focuses on the effects of students’ learning environments on their social / emotional and behavioral functioning in school. The social and emotional functioning of students in general is discussed first. The focus is on motivation for school, and on how teacher-student interactions can undermine or foster student social / emotional functioning. Specific attention is paid to individual and group differences. The focus then turns to children and youth who experience difficulties with social/ emotional and behavioral functioning in school, and because of their difficulties, are unable to access the natural reinforcers in their environments. Methods for arranging the environment in a way that it leads to improvements in the functioning of students with behavioral difficulties in school are discussed.
