The Masterspecialisation Educational Science includes an internship where students learn to apply their acquired knowledge, skills, and critical attitude in the work field of educational experts. Education plays an important role in a diversity of settings and institutions, such as schools, museums, governance bodies, developers of educational materials and educational advice services. The aim of the internship program is to offer students opportunities for practicing and preparing for future positions in this field, and to give insights into the different professions and jobs possible.
The programme includes a practical internship that has to take place in an external organization. This internship is meant to build professional experience in an educational setting. Students work on a particular problem that is encountered at the organization. For instance, students may develop educational materials (textbooks, web applications), refine and evaluate interventions implemented at schools, or give advice on how to implement formative assessment in the classroom or how to improve the school quality control system.
Students can also choose to do a research internship, either internally at the University’s Educational Science Programme group or in an external organization. The research internship provides the student with the opportunity of designing, executing and reporting (practical) research.
Students can choose one of these options:
conduct only a practical internship (external organization);
conduct only a research internship (external organization);
conduct two smaller internships: a practical internship (external organization) and a research internship (external organization or internally at the University).
Students can find an internship by applying for vacancies that are posted on Blackboard or by approaching organizations for opportunities. All internships have to be approved by the internship programme co-ordinator.
The general objectives of an internship are:
integration of knowledge and skills in research and practice previously acquired in course work, in particular in realistic work situations;
the acquisition of further relevant knowledge and skills, and insight into practical situations in the work field;
intensive acquaintance with a relevant field of research or work;
learning to function independently and responsibly in an organization (professional attitudes);
gaining insight into one’s own potential and limitations, both with regard to skills and with regard to personal functioning.
Mode of instruction
Besides the conduction of the actual internship(s), the programme includes several intervision meetings, assignments, and group work activities.
The internship(s) is/are concluded with a final report. This report contains:
a description of the project or assignment executed during the internship, and a critical analysis of the approaches, methods and models used.
a reflection on the professional development: learning experiences during the internship given the learning objectives, the work situation, work tasks and one’s activities and performance during these activities.
The final grade of the Internship is based on (1) the evaluation of the internship supervisor, (2) the quality of the internship report, and (3) participation in group meetings. All parts should be assessed as at least satisfactory. The internship program is concluded by a final presentation about (one of) the internship(s).

NB The exam of this course is a paper. This means that you do not have to register yourself for this exam in uSis.
