Description

This course is all about business decision-making. An online business game will be played in which you will compete as part of a team in a simulated business environment with the aim of increasing company value and becoming the market leader. During the game you will learn how to use financial statements and how business decisions impact performance. You will practice strategic thinking by working on long-term objectives. You will identify market segments, and carry out competitive analysis to establish how you can make your company ‘different’. In doing so, you will learn how leadership, entrepreneurship, and strategy are interrelated. In addition to playing an online business game, you will discuss real-world (Harvard) case studies, apply theoretical knowledge to real-world competitive business issues, and reflect on academic research papers to learn about basic concepts, theories, and frameworks in business decision-making.

  1. To improve your business acumen;
  2. To enhance your strategic thinking;
  3. To increase your understanding of promotional pricing;
  4. To link tactical with operational decisions.

Mode of instruction

Each week starts with an interactive lecture about a key business decision topic. It contains an explanation of the applicable course material covering textbooks and academic research. It also gives you the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world competitive business issues. In a workshop mode of teaching the second session of the week focuses on the (Harvard) case study discussion and the business simulation game. To play the online simulation game in class you(r team) will need a laptop. Required reading must be read in advance of class.

  • There is a no re-sit policy at Leiden University College.

There will be a Blackboard site available for this course. Students will be enrolled at least one week before the start of classes.
