Integrated Project 2

Course
2019-2020

Admission requirements

Mandatory course for students enrolled in the bachelor Security Studies

Pass Integrated Project 1

Description

Integrated project 2 centers around real life challenges and practices, engages students in ‘doing security’ and trains and assesses their professional skills. Students will consult on a real life security or safety challenge presented to them by organisations and practitioners from the security domain.
Students will work in groups on a security and/or safety challenge introduced and explained by a practitioner. Each group is expected to apply the three step approach of ‘explore, understand and do’ in order to respectively collect facts and contextual information on the case at hand (explore), deepen their understanding of several elements of the case by applying disciplinary lenses (understand) and merge these insights to assess and design policy recommendations to address the challenge at hand (do). This will result in a consultancy report in which each group presents their security and/or safety challenge, adopts several disciplinary lenses, integrates their findings and formulates recommendations for further action. Moreover, students will present their findings and recommendations to solve security and safety issues to the organisations.

Assessment method

  1. Individual Policy Paper (contributing to the final Group Paper) (50%)
  2. Final Group Paper (50%)
    a. Final Presentation (Pass/Fail) will be part of your final group paper grade
  3. Participation and reflection by way of personal reflection report (Pass/Fail)

To pass the course students must receive at least a 5.50 for both the individual paper and the group paper. In addition, the course instructor reserves the right to lower an individual grade if there is evidence of “free-riding” on group work.

Attendance
Attendance is mandatory (either lecture or course lab). More than three absences will result in a fail for the course. In case of a fail, no grades will be given, only a fail. This implies that a resit will not lead to a pass. We understand attending as coming to class prepared and participating actively. Arriving 15 minutes late or leaving before the class is dismissed by the instructor also counts as missing a class.

Resit
Students will be permitted to resit the individual paper and group paper if their grade is lower than 5.50, or with permission of the Board of Examiners.

Individual paper resit
If a student fails the individual policy paper he/she will have to re-write the paper which takes on a different angle on the topic following all the requirements stipulated under assignments.

Group paper resit
If the entire group fails the paper they will have to improve the original group paper following all the requirements stipulated under assignments. If an individual fails the group paper (e.g: Due to “free-riding” or illnesses) he or she will be given a new group assignment based on the amount of students which need to do a resit
