Admission requirements

Field School 1 and Field School 2 obtained.


This internship is meant to master your previously acquired skills to enhance your employability opportunities. You can choose between developing an advanced level of fieldwork skills at a faculty project or an archaeological company, an internship at a museum or a governmental organisation, work on archaeological material in a laboratory, or databases or GIS projects.

You can choose any project or company you would like to get more insight in, and where you want to build up experience with the workflow. However, you should make sure that the skills practiced in the Internship BA3 have an added value to your previous field projects, and lead to a portfolio that shows experience in a diversity of type and level of skills.

The length of the fieldwork internship is at least 15 days (5 ec). Please note that a fieldwork that lasts longer than 15 days is only counted as 5 ec – the remaining credits will be stated on the diploma as extra-curricular.

Course objectives

  • Gaining (more) experience in working in a professional environment;

  • Mastering practical archaeological skills including a critical interpretation of and reflection on methodology;

  • Understanding the relevance of archaeology and heritage in present-day society;

  • Understanding the legal and social context and obligations of a project or company;

  • Ability to report in accordance with the stated requirements in a well-structured academic internship report;

  • Ability to work in a professional team;

  • Enhancing your employability by increasing practical skills needed for a future job.

Mode of instruction

Practical work.

Due to COVID-19 measures in place, the set-up of the internship or the mode of instruction may change.

Course load

  • 3 weeks of practical work (4,5 ec);

  • Internship report in which the academic/scientific and societal framework, data and analyses are accounted for. It also includes a critical review of the internship (0,5 ec).

Assessment method

  • A signed internship agreement form must be handed in before the start of the project. For detailed information about this agreement and all matters concerning fieldwork and placements, please see the Fieldschool and Internships Regulations on our website or contact the (region) coordinator;

  • A daily report of each field day must be added as an appendix of the internship report;

  • A sufficient level of acquired practical skills. This assessment is made by the internship supervisor (50%);

  • An internship report that complies with the Faculty standards of reports. Internship reports are graded by project leaders of faculty projects or the internship region coordinator (50%);

Internships are only allowed outside the teaching schedules.

A retake is only possible for the report, and only if all other requirements have been met, including handing in the report before the deadline.
