World Archaeology 3.1: Historical Archaeology

Course
2020-2021

Admission requirements

None.

Description

The lecture series World Archaeology gives an outline of the deep (pre)history of humans from our early ancestors to the more recent and complex societies in the world. The role of material culture in human society is discussed and shown in many regions and periods. Comparisons between different times and places allow us to understand connections between the unique and the universal in the story of human development.

This course will provide an introduction to important themes of the archaeology of Europe, the Mediterranean and the Near East after the Roman era, from Medieval to Early Modern times. Different regions, periods and cultures will be discussed (Franks, Byzantines, Arabs, Crusaders etc.).

We will also address the process of Christianisation, Islamisation, production, exchange, economy, urbanisation, state formation, rise and fall of empires and food and dining habits.
