Research Master Developmental Psychopathology in Education and Child Studies

Welcome to the Master’s Degree Programme (Research) in Developmental Psychopathology in Education and Child Studies. The programme takes two years. Upon completion graduates will possess the knowledge, skills and attitude listed below under Achievement levels. In each course description you will find which achievement levels are trained.

Achievement levels

Graduates of the programme have reached the following achievement levels. These follow the qualifications outlined in the Dublin descriptors.

1. Knowledge and understanding

A graduate of the Research Master’s programme has:
1.1 a thorough understanding of the various theories and concepts which are commonly used in the research programmes that are central to this research master;
1.2 advanced, up to date knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methodology;
1.3 profound knowledge of philosophy and ethics of social research;
1.4 profound awareness of the role of education and learning for children’s and adolescents' development and social participation;
1.5 mastered the fundamentals of research project management.

2. Applying knowledge and understanding

A graduate of the Research Master’s programme has:
2.1 the capacity to apply various theoretical frameworks in conducting independently basic research in the field of developmental psychopathology and educational science;
2.2 the ability of critically selecting, studying and analyzing literature relevant to the issues and problems presented by the curriculum and the connected research programmes;
2.3 the ability to independently formulate, perform and assess scientific research at a level suitable to preparing scientific publications.
2.4 the capacity to connect scientific knowledge and insights to practical issues in develop-mental psychopathology and educational science.

3. Judgement

3.1 A graduate of the Research Master’s programme has the capacity to identify a theoretical framework suitable for addressing relevant problems and issues related to education and learning.
3.2 A graduate of the Research Master’s programme is trained in professional conduct ac-cording to the NVO (Association of Educationalists in the Netherlands) professional code.
3.3 A graduate of the Research Master’s programme has profound knowledge of philosophy and ethics of social research.

4. Communication

A graduate of the Research Master’s programme has:
4.1 the capacity to report independently about relevant research which is carried out accord-ing to current academic standards;
4.2 the ability to write scientific reports in English;
4.3 the ability to engage in the international academic debate.

5. Learning Skills

A graduate of the Research Master’s programme has the capacity to:
5.1 independently acquire new knowledge and skills relevant in a professional context or PhD-programme;
5.2 reflect on his/her own learning process.

Registration for courses and exams

Please note that separate and timely registration in uSis is mandatory for lectures, seminars, exam and re-exam.

First Year

Electives
Courses totaling a study load of 15 ects must be chosen from the courses on offer in English in the Master’s programme Education and Child Studies (Leiden University). The additional requirements for Research Masterstudents in these courses are published in the E-prospectus. Courses on offer in Dutch in the Master’s programme Education and Child Studies may only be chosen if they are necessary to meet the requirements of the NVO-registration Basis-Orthopedagoog.
In addition students can choose (to a maximum of 15 ects) Mastercourses in English (level 500 or 600) on offer in Leiden University or in other universities (to be decided after consultation with the supervisor and upon approval of the Board of examiners).

The additional requirements for Research Masterstudents in these courses are published in the E-prospectus.
