Languages of the World
Description
In this course, we will study the structure of Lamaholot, an Austronesian language spoken in eastern Indonesia. The course will focus on the Central Lembata variety of Lamaholot.
The following aspects in the grammar of Central Lembata are particularly interesting:
a grammatical distinction of alienable and inalienable possession
inflectional affixes which function in differentiating stative and event predicates
an elaborate system of locational verbs encoding distance, vertical and horizontal direction
deictic motion verbs ‘come’ and ‘go’ which also encode the directions ‘up’ and ‘down’
The main goal of this course is to provide an overview of the phonology, morphology and syntax of this Lamaholot variety. Translation, glossing, and formulation exercises will be used in order to convey insights into the grammar of the language. Through the course materials students will obtain insight into the cultural and sociolinguistic situation of the Lamaholot people.
