Multimodal Translation

Vak
2020-2021

Admission requirements

This course is open only to students registered for the Translation specialization.

Description

Translating a text from one language into another is difficult enough as it is. But what happens if a text goes beyond the written word? What if part of the text’s meaning derives from the interaction between words and visuals and sounds? The aim of this course is to familiarize its participants with the challenges a translator faces when translating multimodal discourse. We will explore different types of multimodal texts, such as comics and picture books, films and television shows, songs and musicals, and video games. The emphasis will lie on doing translations that a professional translator may be expected to do and discussing both theoretical and practical problems. The seminars will include practical instruction in the Translation Lab. Some of the seminars may be taught by guest lecturers.
