Description
This course is a continuation of and builds on the course Indo-European Phonology. We will treat the structure of the Indo-European word and study the reconstruction of nominal endings and paradigms, with a focus on the relation between lexical accent and ablaut. Special topics are the categories gender and number in Indo-European, nominal composition, and derivation. We will conclude with a reconstruction of the pronominal system.
Course objectives
After completing this course, the student:
has knowledge of the system of nominal inflection in Proto-Indo-European, including the different categories and paradigm types, as well as the historical development of this system into the main daughter languages.
is able to apply the methodology of reconstructing of Proto-Indo-European morphology to concrete datasets and shows awareness of its pitfalls.
