Mandatory course for students enrolled in the bachelor’s programme Security Studies. Only students of the Bachelor Security Studies can take this course.
Description
In Integrated project 1, students will be challenged to integrate the knowledge and understanding they have gathered in the first year courses and apply these to a case in a group project. The central theme of this course is physical violence and public order. Students will choose present-day challenges related to violence and public order, and will develop artefacts aimed at addressing these problems and rendering change according to the principles and methods of Design Science. The course consists of two video lectures, one live lecture and 12 lab sessions.
The video lectures will introduce students to the topics of violence and public order. In the first video lecture the complexity of violence and public order will be unpacked by zooming in on key concepts, the scope, risk factors involved, as well as the actors and stakeholders that play a role when discussing these topics. The second video lecture is geared towards giving students tools to study violence, help them select a researchable violence related problem to work on in the Integrated Project labs and introduce students to the available and proper methods to study violence. This lecture will build upon instructions given in the corresponding course Introduction to Research Methods on Design Science. The live lecture will give students the opportunity to ask questions and acquire inspiration for topics on their artefacts.
In the twelve lab sessions student will study one particular artefact form. They will learn how these artefact forms can be used to generate change, which strategies can be employed and how to best address target audiences. Specialists from the field will be invited to talk about their experiences with these artefacts and the topic of violence and public order.
Course objectives
After the course students are able to:
Identify and contextualise a contemporary physical violence and public order threat, explain the scope of the threat, understand which actors and stakeholders are involved and recognise the associated risk factors.
Design, construct and present an artefact according to the principles of design science intended to prevent, mitigate and manage the risk factors of a contemporary violence or public order challenge.
Identify the levels of risk intervention and potential target audiences to generate social change related to violence and public order threats.
Compose a basic systematic literature review.
Apply project management skills as well as teamwork skills to the project.
Demonstrate awareness regarding ethical and social dilemmas involved in their case study.

Attendance of the course labs is mandatory. If you miss more than 3 lab sessions you fail the course and won’t obtain a final grade. Students who missed more than 3 lab sessions are not allowed to take part in the resit(s).

Assessment method
Academic Paper
45% of final grade
Grade must be 5.50 or higher
Resit of a fail is possible
Resit will take same form
Artefact Portfolio
55% of final grade
Overall grade of the portfolio must be 5.50 or higher
Resit of a failed portfolio component is possible, with a maximum of 2 assignments.
Resits that require resubmitting improved versions of portfolio components will be capped (70%).
Transitional arrangement
Students who participated in the course ‘Integrated Project 1’ in academic year 2020-2021, failed the portfolio, but passed the academic paper, can keep the grade for the academic paper. These students will have to do all assignments for the portfolio again and are required to attend the lab sessions.
Students who participated in the course ‘Integrated Project 1' in academic year 2020-2021, failed the academic paper, but passed the artefact portfolio, can keep the grade for the artefact portfolio. These students are not required to attend the lab sessions.

Registration
Use uSis to register for this course. Registration for courses in uSis is possible from 15 December, 13.00h. Registration for the workgroups is not necessary, the programme will register students for the workgroups. Some courses and workgroups have a limited number of participants, so register on time (before the course starts). In uSis you can access your personal schedule and view your results.
Leiden University uses Brightspace as its online learning management system. After enrolment for the course in uSis you will be automatically enrolled in the Brightspace environment of this course.
Access to Brightspace is necessary because the syllabus and other information about this course can be found here. Furthermore, announcements and modifications will be communicated via Brightspace.
