Persian Language and Culture 1.
This course is taught in parallel with Persian Language and Culture 2. These courses must be taken simultaneously.

Description

This course introduces students to Persian language media produced in and outside of Iran. The course will provide students with the language skills required to listen and read Persian material in the media through developing their knowledge of the register of the language used in the media as well as enhancing their reading and listening skills. Moreover, it will provide students with the skills required to utilise media sources in their academic research. Various types of sources will be covered throughout lectures and seminars. The course therefore will make use of various themes in the media, and will use audio/visual and written material to achieve this goal.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, students will develop their language skills to level A2. Students will become familiar with the register of the language used in the Persian media. They will be able to identify relevant articles on various topics. Moreover, they will be able to listen to/read sources in the target language and analyse and translate them into English. Student will also acquire knowledge of technical terms and expression used in the media and will:

  • Improve their knowledge of vocabulary

  • Improve their listening skills

  • Have a better understanding of the range of topics/issues in contemporary Persian Media

In addition, students will acquire the skills necessary to include sources from Persian media in their academic research.

Mode of instruction

  • Seminar

Attendance and active participation are obligatory for these seminars. Students are required to prepare for and attend all sessions. The convener needs to be informed without delay of any classes missed for a good reason (i.e. due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness, family issues, problems with residence permits, the Dutch railways in winter, etc.). In these cases it is up to the discretion of the convener of the course whether or not the missed class will have to be made up with an extra assignment. The maximum of such absences during a semester is two. Being absent without notification and/or more than two times can result in exclusion from the term end exams and a failing grade for the course.

  • Coursework: 20% (2x 10%)

  • Mid-term exam: 30%

  • Final written exam: 50%

Resit

There will be only one resit exam, for the midterm and the final, which will count 80%.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
