Description
This course provides an overview of qualitative methodologies in linguistics, focusing on case study, discourse analysis, questionnaire, interview, and integrated methods. Emphasis is placed on: 1) understanding how studies are designed to respond to specific questions, including how questions are derived from prior theory and research; and 2) how validity is assessed, including what counts as evidence and what makes data analysis systematic; 3) how quantitative and qualitative methods compare. To that end, students in the course will read theoretical and practical explanations of prominent qualitative methodologies; critically analyze research reports employing those same methodologies; write a qualitative research design for an original research project employing one or more of the methodologies; and share that research design in a concise oral presentation.
