Admission requirements
This course is an elective and open to bachelor students from all faculties. There are no specific admission requirements, but students should be familiar with social science research or should familiarise themselves in preparation for this course.
Please note that the 5 EC elective ‘Resilience to violence’, offered by FSW in semester 1 is linked to this course. We advise students to follow the course ‘Resilience to violence’ if they are also interested in following this course (Victims and offenders of violence).
Description
During this course students are introduced to the victimological and criminological perspectives on victimisation and offending. In particular, we will focus on victims and offenders of interpersonal violence, that includes sexual violence, domestic violence, lethal violence, dating violence, group-based violence and so forth, as well as the victim-offender overlap in violence. Students will become acquainted with what the victimological and criminological perspectives entail, the types of violence as well as how to research violence. Furthermore, students will gain a deeper understanding of the different perspectives on victimisation and offending, such as criminological, labelling, legal and narrative perspectives. These perspectives will be discussed in the lectures using current events, making use of Podcasts and video materials, and through interactive exercises.
Course objectives
At the end of this course, students are able to:
Understand what victimology and criminology entail and identify its main concepts with regards to victims and offenders of violence;
Identify the practices in researching victims and offenders of violence;
Identify and analyse the main perspectives in studying offending and victimisation;
Apply these main perspectives to current affairs;
Present their findings in an academic and professional way.

Registration
Apply for this course via uSis. Registration opens on July 15th 13:00. If you want to apply for both violence-courses, you need to register for them separately! The course has 100 places open for registration. These are allocated on a first come, first served basis. So apply on time. In uSis you can access your personal schedule and view your results.

Registration in Brightspace is necessary because the syllabus and information on the modules are found here. Furthermore, announcements and modifications will be communicated via Brightspace.
