Individual Internship (NGO, Museum, etc.)

Vak
2021-2022

Admission Requirements

Only students CADS who have completed their propaedeutic phase are eligible for an internship. It is recommended that students also complete the second year course Fieldwork NL.

Description

An internship is a learning period during which the student carries out a specific, predefined task within an organisation and for that organisation. The internship task must be academic in nature, that is to say it must appeal to the intellectual skills and anthropological knowledge of the student, and must fit the student’s plans for a future career at large. The internship can be honoured within the bachelor’s programme CADS as an elective course/component of 10-20 ECTS under the name 'internship at (name of organization)'.

In principle, students will organize their own internship. The internship may be carried out either in the Netherlands or abroad.

Course Objectives

The course objectives are:

  • Learning how knowledge and skills from the CADS study can be applied to a concrete work situation.

  • Learning how academic skills and social science research can be applied in the labour market.

  • Linking the internship to personal learning objectives and competences and personal career ambitions.

Assessment

NB. For forms for the internship plan and internship report, please contact the internship coordinator.

To complete the 'internship' course, the following components must be completed:

In advance, an internship plan of 1 to 2 pages must be submitted to the internship coordinator. This plan must meet the internship requirements (see below) and contain the following elements:

  • name of the organization, with description of the activities of the organization

  • period/duration of the internship, stating the number of hours per week (full-time / part-time)

  • indication of availability within the organization of a physical workplace

  • name of the internship supervisor within the organization

  • internship assignment: description with explanation of the academic element.

  • A short explanation of how the internship connects to the CADS programme as well as how it contributes to the personal development relevant to a CADS student, and how the internship makes a meaningful contribution to the organization

  • After approval of the internship plan, the student will elaborate the academic element into a research proposal (of at least three pages) which will be assessed by the internship coordinator. The research proposal must be written and approved least three weeks before the internship starts. Exceptions to this rule may be made only in exceptional cases and only with the express approval of the internship coordinator.

  • Students on internship must submit a liability form to the exchange coordinator after approval of their internship plan.

The internship coordinator decides on the length of the internship and the number of ECTS to be awarded on completion. A 20 ECTS internship is based on three months of full-time appointment (38-40 hours per week), or six months part-time appointment (18-20 hours per week). The internship must last at least two months on a full-time base in order to meet the 10 EC standards.

  • After the internship a copy of an internship report must be submitted to the internship coordinator, who will assess all aspects of the internship, and who will award a grade. The report must contain three elements: a chronological report of all activities undertaken (e.g. per week), plus a reflection on the internship itself (of approximately five pages), the academic element (a research report of at least three pages), a letter signed by the internship supervisor stating that the student has carried out duties satisfactorily.

Internship Requirements for the organization providing the internship

  • An organisation willing to offer a concrete internship assignment, if possible with a physical workplace. There must be a formal internship supervisor within the organization who will be responsible for the progress of the internship and will guarantee that the internship includes an academic element, which means that at a major part of the time will be spent working on a study relevant to the internship organisation. The research results must also be included in the internship report.

  • If the trainee works in a team with other interns on a project, this must be reported in advance.

  • It is recommended that an internship contract be agreed with the organisation, to define tasks, working hours, mutual expectations, possible internship allowance, etc.

Financial Support

Students on internship abroad can apply for various grants and funds. For more information, please see the scholarships and Loans website.
