Description
In this course we will be looking at the history of the European Union budgetary politics, and the policy-making processes, and current challenges when negotiating the European Union’s budget. The main aims of the course are twofold: 1) to provide students with a thorough understanding of the main challenges currently facing officials when negotiating the EU budget. We will be examining specific examples of EU budget negotiations and the politics surrounding spending EU funds; 2) You will learn how to critically assess policies.
Over the course of two seminars per week we will look at the policy-making procedures surrounding the EU budget. The subsequent six weeks are made up of workgroups in which we will discuss different areas that receive EU spending
Course objectives
Learning outcomes:
To develop students’ knowledge of the EU;
To introduce students to the EU’s budegtray policy processes;
To identify contemporary challenges facing the EU and acquire knowledge of how budgetary policy is formulated in order to respond to them;
To develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the political landscape in Europe and the opportunities and constraints faced by policymakers in negotiation the EU’s budget;
To critique policy;
To develop students’ skills base in respect of: research; critical writing; critical argumentation.

The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average.
Resit
A resit is only available if students fail the course as a whole. A resit will be possible for the research paper.
