This course is part of the minor Violence Studies, which falls under the interdisciplinary programme Social Resilience and Security. This is an interdisciplinary minor, and as such it is suitable for students from a variety of social science disciplines, including security studies, law, criminology, psychology, and related subjects. This course is only available to those following the full minor. Description
During this course students are introduced to the criminological and victimological perspectives on offending and victimisation. In particular we will focus on offenders and victims of interpersonal violence, that includes sexual violence, domestic violence, lethal violence, drug-related violence, group-based violence and so forth as well as the victim-offender overlap in interpersonal violence. Students will become acquainted with the criminological and victimological perspectives on interpersonal violence as well as how to research interpersonal violence. Furthermore, students will gain a deeper understanding of the different perspectives on offending and victimisation, that include criminological, labelling, justice and narrative perspectives. These perspectives will be discussed in the lectures using current events, making use of Podcasts and video materials, and through interactive exercises.
Course objectives
At the end of this course, students are able to:
Understand what victimology and criminology entail and identify its main concepts with regards to victims and offenders of violence;
Identify the practices in researching victims and offenders of violence;
Identify and analyse the main perspectives in studying offending and victimisation;
Apply these main perspectives to current affairs;
Present their findings in an academic and professional way.
