Description
Various sociolinguistic topics are discussed, mainly focusing on the language situation in Latin America. Special attention is given to concepts such as variation, language contact and bilingualism. In addition, this course highlights the linguistic consequences of the co-existence of two or more languages for the community and for the languages themselves. Dialects of Spanish in Latin America are being studied. Attention is also paid to the formulation of research questions and hypotheses for linguistic research.
Course objectives
The student will have knowledge of how society can influence language use;
The student will have knowledge of the intrinsic characteristics of the linguistic variants of the Spanish spoken in Latin America;
The student will be aware and have knowledge of the phenomena that cause language contact.

Exam 50% Written examination with closed questions (eg multiple choice) & Written examination with short open questions
Research proposal 25% (to be handed in between blocks, missing the deadline means 0.2 reduction mark)
Presentation 25%
All three components are compulsory, without one of the three components there is no right to resit. The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average. All subtests will need to be assessed at least with a 5 to be able to determine the weighted average.
Resit
Exam 75%, research proposal 25%
Inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
