Description
Upper-Intermediate Turkish” is designed as a continuation of “Intermediate Turkish” but puts more emphasis on academic and literary reading skills and vocabulary development. By the end of the course, students will achieve a B2 level of Turkish proficiency.
Course objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able to understand articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in Turkey as well as short stories from contemporary Turkish literary prose. Complex sentences such as subordination of verbal and nominal predicates and relative clauses will be mastered through reading such texts. By the end of the course, students will also be able to write texts that describe a wide range of subjects related to their field of interest, understand extended speech on familiar topics, analyze and translate Turkish texts to English, and engage in written and spoken communication with native speakers in a variety of complex issues.

Mode of instruction
Seminar
Attendance and active participation are obligatory for seminars. Students are required to prepare for and attend all sessions. The convenors need to be informed without delay of any classes missed for a good reason (i.e. due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness, family issues, problems with residence permits, the Dutch railways in winter, etc.). In these cases it is up to the discretion of the convener(s) of the course whether or not the missed class will have to be made up with an extra assignment. The maximum of such absences during a semester is two. Being absent without notification and/or more than two times can result in exclusion from the term end exams and a failing grade for the course.
