Description
In this seminar students read and discuss primary and secondary Korean language sources related to visual arts and the politics of culture in North Korea. Close reading and critical analysis of both North and South Korean texts introduces students to the theory and practices governing the North Korean art world, familiarizes them with an art-related lexicon, academic styles of writing and argumentation, and lets them think about the epistemic risks of ideological bias.
Course objectives
This course has the following goals:
to improve the Korean reading skills;
to introduce the state of the field
to develop a research methodology;
to develop deep reading skills of written and visual materials;
to further develop writing skills;
to further develop presentation skills.

4.000 word term paper (50%)
In order to pass the course, students must obtain an overall mark of 5.50 (=6) or higher. A revised version of the final assignment may be submitted if the overall mark for the course is “5.49” (=5) or lower. The deadline for this version will be determined in consultation. In the case of a re-write the overall grade will not exceed 6.0.
