Environmental Governance

Vak
2022-2023

Admission requirements

Required course(s):

None, but either of the 100-level Sharing Scarcity courses is recommended.

Description

This course investigates contemporary forms of environmental politics and governance. In recent decades, industrial pollution and anthropogenic climate change have put ‘the environment’ on the political and policy agenda. Increasingly, governments propose plans to tackle environmental problems in a variety of ways. This does not only raise questions about contemporary modes of environmental governing, but also about environmental politics and related normative concerns.

The goal of this course is to offer BA students with an understanding of pressing environmental governance issues and strategies, including the ‘wickedness’ of environmental problems, emerging governance networks, prospects of green state regulations, the rise of green capitalism, environmental citizenship, and issues of environmental justice and decolonisation. Governance approaches are explored in urban, national and transnational contexts. The course will also address the role of private stakeholders and civil society actors, in a wider governance perspective. Throughout the course, special emphasis is put on governance related to climate change.

Course Objectives

  • Characterise different types of environmental governance;

  • Explain the role of state and non-state actors in environmental governance;

  • Reflect on normative aspects underlying environmental governance;

  • Communicate topical environmental governance issues to different audiences.
