Description
We have established in the course ICT enabled process innovation that process oriented thinking and the (re)engineering of business processes can change the way that companies carry out their business and improve their performance. In this course Process modelling we will focus on the process engineer, as an agent of this change, and provide him or her with a scientifically sound set of engineering methods and tools. During the course, the participants will become familiar with the look-and-feel of one informal approach to business process modelling, based on BPMN and one formal approach, based on Petri nets, and gain hands-on experience with the tools supporting these approaches in a realistic case study. Finally we will provide an overview of recent developments in the field of process mining and automated process discovery.
Course objectives
By the end of this course the student should :
be able to create business process models with BPMN and understand its relationship with more formal approaches
understand the formal approach to business process modelling and analysis based on Petri nets
have a basic understanding of the theory behind Petri nets
be able to create a Petri net model in a realistic case study
be able to analyze that model to establish the properties of the process design even before implementation, i.e. on the “drawing board”
be familiar with Woped and CPN Tools, both tools for creating and analyzing Petri nets.
have a basic understanding of methods for automated process discovery
be familiar with some of the more commonly used tools for process mining and automated process discovery
Timetable
You will find the timetables for all courses and degree programmes of Leiden University in the tool MyTimetable (login). Any teaching activities that you have sucessfully registered for in MyStudyMap will automatically be displayed in MyTimeTable. Any timetables that you add manually, will be saved and automatically displayed the next time you sign in.
MyTimetable allows you to integrate your timetable with your calendar apps such as Outlook, Google Calendar, Apple Calendar and other calendar apps on your smartphone. Any timetable changes will be automatically synced with your calendar. If you wish, you can also receive an email notification of the change. You can turn notifications on in ‘Settings’ (after login).

Mode of instruction
Every week: 2 hours lecture and 1 hour exercise class per session
Assessment method
The final grade is a weighted average of the grades for the written exam and the exercise class. The grade for the written exam must be at least 5.0. The weighting factors are as follows:
Exercise class : 30 %
Written exam : 70 %
Exercise class will be graded based on:presence during class
results on selected exercises and assignments from the course syllabus
a final report of the running case, that must be handed in before the end of the course.
The teacher will inform the students how the inspection of and follow-up discussion of the exams will take place.

We will use the following books:
1. Modelling Business Processes – A Petri Net-Oriented Approach, by W.M.P van der Aalst and C Stahl (MIT Press, 2011)
2. BPMN Method and Style by Bruce Silver (Cody-Cassiy Press, 2011)
Other materials like a syllabus and lecture slides will be provided during the course.

Please note that it is compulsory to both preregister and confirm your participation for every exam and retake. Not being registered for a course means that you are not allowed to participate in the final exam of the course. Confirming your exam participation is possible until ten days before the exam.
