Admission requirements

Only for students who have passed ‘Klassiek Chinees 1’ of ‘Klassiek Chinees keuzevak’. If you have knowledge of Classical Chinese (comparable to that of having successfully finished BA1 Classical Chinese), please contact the instructor about admission to the course.

Description

In this course we will read premodern Korea through writings by (predominantly) Korean intellectuals in Classical Chinese. Classes will consist of two distinct but related elements:

  1. Lectures on selected topics from premodern Korea
  2. Associated readings in Classical Chinese

Students are expected to read the (English language) literature on premodern Korea in the reading lists before class and prepare the translations of the original source materials in Classical Chinese.
The course will be capped by a research paper that needs to incorporate sources in Classical Chinese translated by the students themselves.

Course objectives

  • Obtain understanding of premodern Korea both through the reading of original sources and secondary literature

  • Advanced basic reading comprehension of primary sources in Classical Chinese

  • Ability to use dictionaries and reference works related to premodern Korea(n sources)

  • Ability to translate Classical Chinese to Dutch or English

  • Ability to use primary sources in a research paper

  • Ability to design a research paper under supervision

Assessment method

  • Active preparation in class (of translations etc) 25%

  • Research paper 75% - which breaks down into:

    1. Paper outline 10 hrs 5%
    2. Paper sources bibliography 20 hrs 10%
    3. Draft paper 50 hrs 20%
    4. Paper presentation 20 hrs 15%
    5. Final version paper 50 hrs 25%

To pass the course students must receive an overall mark of 5.50 (=6) or higher and a passing grade for the paper assignment (5.5 or higher) and all of its constitutive elements. Students who failed the course (receiving an overall mark of 5.49 [=5] or lower) or who failed the paper assignment must take a resit. The resit consists of a research paper (worth 100% of the grade).
The course is an integrated whole. All categories must be completed in the same academic year. No partial marks can be carried over into following years. Students may make an individual appointment with the instructor within 30 days of the announcement of the exam grades in order to view their exam.
