Description

For most businesses and governmental organizations, the cost and effort of continued development and maintenance of software technology far exceeds the investment in its initial development. In this course, we explore the fundamental forces that drive software evolution and we discuss techniques for managing software evolution, including measurement and monitoring of software quality and architecture, application portfolio management, and software risk assessment. You will have the opportunity to apply such techniques by carrying out a number of management tasks on software development activities of students in other courses.

Course objectives

Upon completion of the course, students will have an in-depth understanding of the mechanisms that drive software evolution. They will understand the resulting organizational and technical challenges and they will be able to apply various techniques to deal with those challenges. Specifically, students will be able to:

  • Explain various laws of software evolution and the mechanisms that drive software evolution.

  • Define the concepts of software quality, maintainability, and technical debt and their relationships to the evolvability of software.

  • Assess the current state of a software system or project, identify associated business risks, and recommend mitigating actions.

  • Design software development controls and monitor the ongoing development of a software system using these controls.

  • Create and communicate a structured plan for business-driven future evolution of a software system.

  • Recognise and circumvent social obstacles when working with software development teams whose software is being assessed or monitored.

Assessment method

Assessment is based on:

  • Presence and participation in the lectures and lab work

  • Written (group) assignments: 70%

  • Written (individual) exam: 30%

Software
Starting from the 2024/2025 academic year, the Faculty of Science will use the software distribution platform Academic Software. Through this platform, you can access the software needed for specific courses in your studies. For some software, your laptop must meet certain system requirements, which will be specified with the software. It is important to install the software before the start of the course. More information about the laptop requirements can be found on the student website.
